Yes, but I believe his point is that a writer can't fall back on "it's real" as an excuse for how/why something happens. Reality is messy, loaded with ridiculous coincidences, and flat-out unbelievable sometimes.
None of us want those phrases should be applied to our writing. :)
The tip is good for all types of writing.
