I haven't actually seen it).
* Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Merlin, CharmedAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859940184293909528.post-33436908510701881452009-07-22T18:35:02.811-07:002009-07-22T18:35:02.811-07:00Actually, my buddy Matt who helped insire this had...Actually, my buddy Matt who helped insire this had a few random thoughts I'm going to tack on here.

To be honest, I'm jealous I didn't think of some of this...

"Another thing that I thought interesting in the whole superhero/superpowers discussion is the act of naming. Superheroes almost always give (or are given) a special moniker to denote both their particular kind of power and, implicitly, their public persona. The "bat" in Batman indicates something dark, atmospheric, etc., while Iron Man connotes both the power of technology and Tony Stark's place as its master.

What's also fascinating is that quite often, the name transcends the individual hero. As one hero with the name dies/quits/disappears, another individual comes to assume his/her place, taking on the mantel of that name. Thus, Wally West becomes The Flash, taking the position originated by Barry Allen. Once the superhero becomes truly iconic, it becomes a position, not an individual.

Sort of like the Dread Pirate Roberts."Virtual Strangerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01040333093180694172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859940184293909528.post-86838210509669588032009-07-04T20:13:41.305-07:002009-07-04T20:13:41.305-07:00Superman, Doctor Manhattan, and Firestorm all fall...Superman, Doctor Manhattan, and Firestorm all fall under the superhero umbrella, though, not superpowers. That was the specific point I was making, that superheroes tend to have overwhelming abilities while superpower characters do not. ;)

Alas, I don't know the character of Remo Williams well enough to say in his case. Although MacGyver... I think near the end there MacGyver may have been closer to pure fantasy... :)Virtual Strangerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01040333093180694172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859940184293909528.post-74085064424308968852009-07-04T13:00:47.863-07:002009-07-04T13:00:47.863-07:00You don't think Superman, Doctor Manhattan, Re...You don't think Superman, Doctor Manhattan, Remo Williams or Firestorm have overwhelming powers?
