And that's okay. I think...It's never too late to be noticed. :)

I think we're advocating the same things, Frank. You summed it up a lot quicker than me with "make them easy to follow." And your mosaic analogy is perfect. If they're not part of the bigger pattern, they shouldn't be there.Virtual Strangerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01040333093180694172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859940184293909528.post-90995687042927599002009-11-30T13:38:05.248-08:002009-11-30T13:38:05.248-08:00hello
probably too late to be noticed
my take on...hello

probably too late to be noticed

my take on transitions is a bit different.

yes they have to carry their weight, like any other device, but used with skill, they can help drive a story forward with gathering power, like an avalanche. It can be the difference between one man charging a pill box (and you know he should die), or ten men working together and covering each other as they get it done. (And the poor guy behind the machine gun with no place to run never had a chance to get more than two of the attackers).

I mean, take the timid path and "Lost" never happens. Or "The Stand."

The trick is to establish how transitions are to be done so they become easy to follow. Make the laws and obey them.

Also, there needs to be a larger, simple context, in which the little parts fit and build towards something that becomes coherent, like a tile mosaic as the field of view widens.frank farrarnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859940184293909528.post-75877174080003269062009-11-28T17:44:05.804-08:002009-11-28T17:44:05.804-08:00Yeah, well, we all come up with crazy ideas someti...Yeah, well, we all come up with crazy ideas sometimes... ;)

I still think it's a clever idea, I just question if it's an appropriate idea when seen in context with everything else. There's lots of cool stuff that gets scowled at just because it's in the wrong place, or maybe even in the right place but surrounded by too much other stuff.

In the interest of fairness, though, my first attempt at a novel, The Suffering Map, would randomly skip between four main characters, another four or five secondary characters, and a few third-tier ones who only appeared for single chapters.

Heck, there were two chapters that took the POV of animals in the story! And one of those was written in first-person plural!

And people wonder why I won't show that book to anyone... :)Virtual Strangerhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01040333093180694172noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1859940184293909528.post-27339628872991805882009-11-27T03:30:19.753-08:002009-11-27T03:30:19.753-08:00A chapter entirely in verse?
